Darrington Strong Board Meeting Minutes
Monday, March 20, 2023

The meeting was held at Darrington Coffee Co. and Marla Skaglund opened the meeting.

Review and Approval of the Treasurer’s Report:
Carson submitted the treasurer’s report showing a balance of $26,014.81 for all accounts. Rick moved to “approve the treasurer’s report as submitted”; Savannah seconded and the motion carried.

Approval of Last Meeting’s Minutes:
Savannah moved to “approve the minutes of the February 20, 2023 Darrington Strong Board meeting; Carson seconded and the motion carried.

Website Updates:
Discover Darrington: Marla announced she will be updating the photos on the site.

Unfinished Business:
Darrington Day Celebration: After her meeting with town hall, Savannah reported that we cannot close down the streets requested due to the archery events occurring on the same day, though Emens St could be closed if we secure the agreement of all residents on that section of street. All agreed that the event needs an attractive name, and options were discussed. “Park Faire” or a version of that was floated but no decision was reached.

New Business:
April General Meeting: The guest speaker will be Snohomish County Councilmember Nate Nehring. It was suggested and agreed upon that we should have three five-minute presentations by other speakers before Nate takes the “stage”, and options were discussed. Due to the library closure the meeting will be held at the Darrington Fire Station.

Membership Drive: Carson reported that the membership drive will begin at the April general meeting.

Glacier Peak Institute (GPI): Carson announced the plan to work with GPI on transferring books from the Sauk Trading Post building to the library via a “human chain/bucket brigade” commencing later this year when the library remodel is completed.

DS Safe Deposit Box: Carson presented the contents of the bank safe-deposit box, which Carson closed as it was an unnecessary expense.

DS Meeting Minutes: Carson requested that the meeting minutes be completed at least two weeks before the next board meeting. Rick suggested sending the minutes to all board members via email during the week following the meeting, giving board members an opportunity to make corrections or add information he may have omitted.

Darrington Strong Updates:
Future General Meetings: Savannah reported that the fire station is booked for our general meetings through the end of 2023. The room capacity is only 25 people so arrangements may have to be made to accommodate additional attendees.

Family Dollar Store: Carson reported that the project is on hold and there is no determination on whether the store will come to Darrington, as they are also considering several sites for new stores in western Washington.

“National Trails Day”: Forrest opened a discussion about rejuvenating the event that has traditionally been held on the first Saturday in June, and the need for a new organizer in lieu of Martha’s departure from the area this spring; options were discussed.

Darrington Historical Society: Forrest Clark, as the new president of the organization, introduced a brief discussion about potentially opening a Darrington museum in the area.
